You Are Cordially Invited – Theatre On The Edge

If you love a wedding, then this is a show to die for. You will be warmly welcomed into a charmingly-prepared wedding reception venue and handed a glass of bubbly while listening the strains of 'Chapel of Love' and 'Matchmaker' sung by fiesty 'best woman' Kate, (Gina Garton) and acerbic Aunty Lillian, (Lynda Harrison) in between their attempts to support the mother of (one of) the grooms - the delightful, eye-dabbing, Betty, (Jackie Rodgers).

We are at the reception for the wedding of impish Issy, (Liam Aspen) who is a man, and easily-embarrassed Robert, (Jamie Wilks) who is also a man – in other words, a Gay wedding. We listen to the little speeches, the innuendos, are shown the 'naughty' photos, and smirk at the risqué stories; but the dropped speech-notes and the shrill laughs are interspersed with touching comments, fond recollections and an occasional serious moment.....

But if you only like a dance and a bit of a sing-along, then make the most of it – because Issy's landlord and, up-until-now, understated, wedding-guest, Tom, (Chris Gruca) is about the embark upon an intense and emotional speech about gay oppression and all the heartache it caused in the past – along with a serious warning that Trump and his ilk would happily take back all the progress that has, so recently, been made....

Then the music starts up once again, and we are reminded of the true message of 'You Are Cordially Invited' : It is that we all have the right to be who we are, and to love whoever is that we choose to love....
